Two innovative achievements of the rheological measurement product portfolio
2025-05-05
At the end of March 2025, Anton Paar launched two new products for rheological measurements: the SmartMelt series (including SmartMelt 92 and SmartMelt 102e) and an innovative electrotribological device tailored for MCR rheometers.
SmartMelt: Setting a new benchmark for polymer melt testing
The brand-new SmartMelt series is specially developed for the quality control of polymer melts. Polymer melt refers to the plastic that is in a molten state during processing such as injection molding or extrusion. In this state, the flow and deformation characteristics can be analyzed very well.
The SmartMelt system can provide comprehensive rheological characterization, far beyond simple MFI (Melt Flow Index) testing. The MFI test can only provide a single measurement value of plastic fluidity under fixed conditions. In contrast, SmartMelt can generate complete rheological maps (such as flow curves, frequency scans, relaxation or creep behavior), thereby enabling a detailed assessment of material properties.
The SmartMelt series features industry-leading heating rates, ease of operation, and comprehensive software integration capabilities, capable of delivering accurate and reliable results. It fully complies with ASTM D4440 standard and is suitable for industrial applications.
Electrotribology: Bringing new insights to electric vehicles and high-voltage Applications
With the help of a new type of electrotribological device based on the MCR friction meter, Anton Paar was able to measure the electrical properties of lubricants under real friction conditions for the first time. This research and development is particularly targeted at lubricant, additive and bearing manufacturers as well as electric vehicle producers.
The aim is to optimize the conductivity of the lubricant to prevent the charge accumulation effect and failure of the bearing components. The charge accumulation effect is caused by the accumulation of static electricity resulting from friction or an electric field near electrical equipment. If the accumulated charge does not dissipate, a sudden discharge (breakdown) will occur, causing damage to the bearing material and significantly shortening its service life.
The operating temperature range of the electro-tribological device is extremely wide, from -40 ℃ to +200 ℃. One set of the device can achieve the joint analysis of tribology and rheology. The integrated LCR measurement device can measure electrical characteristics such as resistance, capacitance and inductance, and can be directly integrated into the RheoCompass software, making data acquisition and evaluation more convenient.
